Biography

Amara Diallo works with cloth as a painter works with canvas: dyeing, unravelling and re-stitching until the weave carries a coastline. Indigo from the dye pits of her grandmother's quarter in Dakar, rust gathered from the Atlantic shipyards and raw pigment are layered into hanging fields that move when a visitor walks past.

The journey

From costume design for Dakar's dance companies to room-scale textile installation, shown in Dakar, Paris and Lagos, and now held in private collections in three continents.

Artistic vision

Thread is a way of drawing that does not lie about time.
